Kada Closure Period: December 23rd, 2024 – January 12, 2025.
Canopy Cancer Care’s new facility in Epsom required a fit-out that would create a supportive, welcoming environment for patients undergoing cancer treatment. Pilkington 6 Design partnered closely with Kada to bring this vision to life, focusing on crafting a space that enhances well-being and fosters a sense of peace during what can be a physically and emotionally challenging time for patients.
The partnership between Pilkington 6 Design and Kada was essential to the success of the project, with both teams working tirelessly to design custom solutions. A significant part of this collaboration involved the creation of bespoke products such as coloured Series 1 chairs and custom Regard Modular Lounge Seating, paired with the M Path Recliner. These custom designs were the result of countless hours of work from both parties, ensuring that the furniture not only suited the aesthetic of the space but also met the functional and performance requirements of the healthcare setting.
The success of the project lies in its holistic, human-centric approach to healthcare design. Pilkington 6 Design aimed to create a clinic that would embrace a welcoming, soothing, and enduring environment, elevating the patient experience while supporting the well-being of healthcare providers. Recognising that a patient’s well-being is influenced not only by their medical treatment but also by the emotional and psychological experience within the healthcare environment, the brief focused on designing a space that fostered comfort, tranquillity, and peace.
Key to the project’s brief was selecting products that could be adapted to integrate seamlessly with the overall design while also ensuring that they met performance standards to support both staff and patients. The colour palette of earthy tones, particularly greens and orange accents, were chosen to create a soothing and natural atmosphere, aligning with the clinic’s goals. Kada played a pivotal role in supplying custom-designed furniture that matched this vision.
The Steelcase Series 1 task chair was a key part of the fit-out, selected for its ergonomic design, ideal for long hours of use by both patients and staff. Custom-coloured in white, green, and brown, the chairs complemented the natural tones of the clinic, adding to the calming environment. With adjustable lumbar support and multiple seat settings, the Series 1 offers personalised comfort, ensuring durability and support in a demanding healthcare environment.
Kada’s NZ-Made Elevate Height Adjustable desks were another crucial addition, allowing staff to switch between sitting and standing positions, promoting better posture and reducing strain during long work hours. These desks are perfectly suited to healthcare settings, where flexibility and ergonomic support are essential.
The collaboration between Pilkington 6 Design and Kada also led to the inclusion of Regard Modular Lounge Seating and the M Path Recliner, creating comfortable, relaxing spaces for patients. The modular design allows for versatile configurations, offering privacy while enabling social interaction. Customised in calming greens, blues, and browns, these pieces seamlessly integrated into the clinic’s serene environment. The M Path Recliner, with its smooth reclining mechanism and supportive design, provides a restful space for patients during treatment. This was further complemented by Vitra Nes tables, providing practical surfaces for personal items or refreshments without disrupting the tranquil setting.
This project was more than just a fit-out; it was about creating a clinic that takes a holistic approach to healthcare. By selecting products from Steelcase, Vitra, and NZ-Made ranges, Pilkington 6 Design was able to offer functional solutions that elevated the overall design while meeting the performance brief of Canopy Cancer Care. The combination of ergonomic furniture, custom colours, and thoughtful design has transformed Canopy Cancer Care’s facility into a space that supports both patient well-being and staff efficiency.
The success of this partnership has proven the value of collaboration, and the products selected are now implemented across several Canopy Cancer Care clinics. We are excited to continue working with Kada for the next clinic opening at the end of the year. The result is a well-considered, functional space that enhances the overall experience for those undergoing cancer care, reflecting the clinic’s commitment to patient-centred design.
