Built in 1906, Alfred Nathan House is a cherished part of the University of Auckland's city campus, serving the university's administration staff. Following seismic assessments that identified the need for significant structural intervention, the project evolved into a broader interior refurbishment and new extension, breathing new life into this Category A heritage-listed Italianate building.

The challenge was to sensitively adapt the historic spaces to accommodate a range of modern university functions, including the Student Information Centre, International Office, School of Graduate Studies, Student Partnership Office, and Communications and Marketing departments, without compromising the building's heritage character.

On the ground floor, existing masonry walls were opened up to create a series of interconnected rooms, with mobile pill-shaped kiosks serving as student triage points in the main receiving space. The original heritage fabric was repainted in varying whites, with greens, ochres, black and natural oak introduced to add warmth and echo the lush greenery visible from every window.
